Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research associates to join our team and investigate the physics of lightning discharges using computer models.
Lightning is one of the most spectacular and complex processes in the Earth sciences. Despite its prevalence, many fundamental questions around the lightning discharge remain unsolved. For example, we do not fully understand how a lightning channel progresses, and why it is often accompanied by bursts of energetic particles.
Recently the European Research Council (ERC) awarded a Consolidator Grant that addresses these questions from the computational side. The objective is to couple models for the many physical processes at work in a lightning stroke, such as gas heating and expansion, electrostatic interactions and high-energy processes.
To succeed in this task we need excellent researchers to join our team.
The successful applicants will work at the Astrophysics Institute of Andalusia (IAA), which is part of the Spanish Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the fourth largest European research organization by scientific output. The IAA is a reference center for research in Astrophysics and Atmospheric and Planetary Physics and is located in Granada, one of the most beautiful and lively cities in southern Spain, with an average of 118 clear days per year.
The salary will be around 44000 EUR per year before taxes. We offer two-year contracts with the possibility of extension for another one. The starting date is negotiable but expected to be around october 2017.
We look for motivated and creative researchers. The ideal candidate has a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a similar field and an excellent research record in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Plasma Physics or High-energy Monte Carlo Simulations. However, canditates with different backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
You can apply for this positions using this form. Alternatively you can send your CV and a cover letter introducing yourself and explaining your motivations to A. Luque [aluque AT iaa.es]. Review of applications will begin on July 15, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.
